Instagram Told Me I Am Ugly. Snapchat Told Me I Am Lonely.

Updated: Jun 29, 2019

Yes you read the title correct. Social media literally makes me hate myself. #StatusofMind was a research study done on 1,500 young people ages 14-24. With the goal to discover the correlation between mental health and social media. Instagram and Snapchat being one of the most popular platforms are also the most mentally exhausting and hurtful. More people are becoming addicted to social media then they are alcohol and cigarettes.

Just think about that for a minute. More addicted then alcohol and cigarettes.

When you shut down your phone or computer how do you feel after using social media?

The results the study published on Forbes and BBC found was that users of Instagram felt more insecure and less attractive and Snapchat users felt left out and more alone. Both these platforms are image based and basically it is a race to see who can present their life to look the best.

My personal opinion: YES YES YES

To quote my sister “I knew I wasn’t crazy. That's why we need to take breaks.” For me last night I started to notice how I literally would count comments and likes and that’s how I measured my worth. Didn’t matter people thought I was pretty in real life…I needed public affirmation. I needed the mental stimulation. It is estimated that most youth 14-24 literally get a high when the phone buzzes. Dopamine gets released in our brain and we feel happy being validated. Most of the time by people we don’t even know or care about. Even worse...most of the time we don't even notice.

So how do we stop this?

Well fist step. You’re not crazy if you’re like me and already have low self-esteem yes social media is making it worse. If no one else will validate your feelings I will because they are real.

Second step. Remove it. Today I deleted the apps off my phone and only put them on now for my blog and I’m not posting or looking at anyone else’s post. I can admit to not being able to go on social media without comparing myself.

It’s okay to take a break and reevaluate yourself.

Third step. Everyone has issues. People may be posting how lovely their life is and how much fun they’re having but don’t be fooled. Don’t compare your behind the scenes to someone’s highlight reel. You’ll always feel sad and I promise you’re better then that.

Final step. You are beautiful and smart and talented and whatever Instagram and Snapchat says you are not; you are. You are all those things and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Maybe if we take a look up from our phones and stop for a moment trying to fish for likes. We will see we actually have people who love us. Who will not only love you in private but love you in public too…those my friends are the only people who matter.

So social media I love you but we have to break up. I have a bag of issues I need to deal with and you’re not helping. So we can be friends hopefully but right now…it’s cancelled.
